The CSS Worksafe ladder safety training course covers the safe use of portable ladders and roofers ladders. The training course has an emphasis on the practical use of ladders and covers the use of ladder stability devices, securing of ladders and the use of personal fall protection equipment, often referred to as ladder safety systems or ladder restraint systems.
The most recent HSE guidance on the safe use of ladders, ‘INDG 455 – Safe use of Ladders and Stepladders, an Employers Guide’ states that “On a ladder where you cannot maintain a handhold, other than for a brief period, other measures will be needed to prevent a fall or reduce the consequences of one”. In practice this means that if you are using a ladder to work from and cannot complete the task with one hand, you must use provide an additional means of support for the user and a means of arresting a fall.
